A HELPING HAND

Turn SRT or VTT subtitles into a text transcript

Subtitle files already contain words and timings. Remove the timing markers to obtain readable text you can copy or download. This tool needs an SRT or VTT file; it does not listen to a video or transcribe speech.

Prepare the transcript

  1. Import an .srt or .vtt file, or paste its contents into the source area. Use the built-in example to try the workflow without a personal file.
  2. Choose separate blocks to retain reading breaks, or continuous text to join the captions.
  3. Prepare the result, review the preview and copy the text or download a UTF-8 TXT file.

Before and after

SRT source:
1
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,000
Welcome to the workshop.

Text result:
Welcome to the workshop.

Words, spelling mistakes and repetitions come from the source. If two captions repeat a sentence, it will also repeat in the transcript. The tool does not rewrite or automatically reorder the captions.

Continuous text is not an edited article. Review punctuation, speaker changes and paragraph breaks before publishing or sharing it.

Fix unreadable characters

If an older file displays broken accents or other characters, select Windows-1252 and import it again. UTF-16 is also available. Choose the encoding that matches the original; changing the output extension does not repair incorrectly decoded text.

Each imported subtitle file is limited to 2 MB. Keep a copy of the SRT or VTT if you may need its timings later, because the plain-text transcript no longer contains them.

Keep subtitles but adjust their timing or format

If captions need to appear two seconds later, use Shift subtitle timing with +2. A constant offset cannot correct drift that grows throughout a video.

To change between SRT and VTT, use the subtitle format converter. It preserves the text and timings but simplifies formatting and positioning. Check the converted file in your intended player.

Download your result before closing or reloading the page or changing language. Processing stays in the browser tab and does not replace the source file.
