A HELPING HAND

Share a video without its sound

Before posting a listing or family video, remove the recorded conversation or music. Learn how to prepare and check a copy with no audio track while keeping your original.

Share the picture without sharing the conversation

A product, pet or DIY video may include a private conversation in the background. Before posting it in a listing or on social media, make a copy with no audio track. Keep the movement and scene while removing recorded voices and music.

A player’s mute button does not change the file. Here every audio track is removed from the copy: someone downloading the result cannot simply turn that track back on in a player. Keep your original if you may want the sound later.

Prepare and check your copy

  1. Choose your video or try the sample with sound.
  2. Select Remove the sound. Video is copied without re-encoding.
  3. Check the silent preview and download the copy. Keep the original.

The built-in sample contains sound and does not start automatically. Listen to the original, remove its audio and watch the copy. Check the start, a moving section and the end. If the source contains several languages or sound tracks, all of them are removed.

A video with no audio track is accepted and identified as already silent. A track that contains silence is different: it still exists and will be removed. An invalid import or cancellation keeps your last valid download. Check the displayed filename to avoid mixing up two results.

Keep picture quality and use the right format

Video is copied without re-encoding. This tool does not lower picture quality or resolution to remove sound, and does not deliberately change frame rate. It does not cut a section or add replacement music. To make the picture data smaller by re-encoding, use Compress a video instead.

A compatible MP4, MOV or M4V containing H.264 produces an MP4. A WebM with VP8 or VP9 remains WebM. Orientation and dimensions are preserved; still check playback in the application where you will share the file. A .mov extension does not guarantee a supported codec: HEVC, HDR and transparency are not supported in this first release.

Removing audio may reduce file size, but this is not picture compression. Rewriting the container may even make a small file slightly larger. Compare what you need to keep before replacing any source file.

Limits and privacy

This release accepts files up to 100 MiB and ten minutes. The shared engine (about 32 MB) loads on first import; download time is different from audio-removal time. Local copying is usually much faster than re-encoding, but file size, memory and your device still matter. A computer is recommended; performance on real phones remains unvalidated.

Your file is not uploaded to a processing server. Cancel stops the operation and your original is never overwritten. Download before closing the page or changing language. If you also want to keep the sound, Extract audio from a video can create an MP3 from your original.

Embedded subtitles and chapters are also excluded from the copy. Some metadata may remain: this is not a general privacy scrubber. An address visible in the picture stays visible even when the sound has been removed.
