A HELPING HAND
Split a PDF into two parts: document and appendices
Choose a cut between pages to create two files without cutting page content.
Choose the cut
- Import one PDF with at least two pages. Count page positions from the start of the file, including any cover.
- Enter the last page of the first part. A cut at 8 means after page 8: check that the summary starts the second part at page 9.
- Create the two PDFs. Use each separate download link and open both copies before continuing with either one.
Example: separate the appendices
Document: 12 pages Last page of the first file: 8 First PDF: pages 1–8 Second PDF: pages 9–12
Choose the right tool
Splitting in two creates consecutive groups. For pages 1, 4 and 7, choose Extract pages. For one file per page, use the separate tool. To cut a scanned page into two halves, use Split scanned double pages.
Page numbers mean positions in the file, which may differ from printed numbers. Open both results and check their first and last pages.
For a 12-page document, cut positions 1 through 11 are valid. A cut at 0, 12 or a decimal does not leave two valid groups. A one-page PDF cannot be split into two files with this tool.
Limits
50 MB per PDF; the shared PDF session holds up to 30 files, 150 MB and 1,000 pages. This operation splits the active document. The two results together must fit within the 150 MB output limit. Use an unlocked copy of protected files.
Keep signed originals: digital signature validity is not preserved and form fields may be lost. Files stay on your device; download before leaving.
Download both parts before continuing
The result contains two named PDF links, one for each part. Check that the first file ends at page 8 and the second starts at page 9 in the example above. Both retain the original page sizes and orientations.
Continue with this PDF loads only the chosen result for the next operation. It replaces the documents and results in the PDF session, so download both parts first. Your original file on disk is not replaced.
Changing the cut or finding a chapter boundary
Changing the cut does not update the existing downloads. They are marked as previous results until you create the two PDFs again. If a new cut is invalid, read the error and do not mistake the previous downloads for a new result.
The tool uses the cut you enter; it does not find chapter headings or blank pages automatically. Look up the boundary in your original PDF. A printed page number may differ from its position because of a cover or introductory pages.
Other ways to separate pages
- Extract PDF pages — Keep non-consecutive pages such as 1, 4 and 7, in your chosen order.
- Save each PDF page separately — Download one PDF for each selected page.
- Split scanned double pages — Cut the image of a scanned double page into left/right or top/bottom halves.
