A HELPING HAND
Split scanned book spreads into single PDF pages
A scan of an open book puts two reading pages on one PDF page. Split selected spreads into left and right pages while leaving a single-page cover intact. This is different from dividing a PDF into two separate files.
Choose the pages and cut position
- Open the scanned-spread splitting tool and import your PDF. Select the PDF pages that contain two reading pages; leave a single-page cover out of the selection.
- Choose a left/right cut for an open book. Move the divider if the binding is not exactly in the middle. A top/bottom cut is available for content stacked vertically.
- Check both previews, create the PDF and download the copy. Inspect its beginning, end and content close to the binding.
Example: keep the cover, split two spreads
Input page 1: cover Input page 2: left A / right B Input page 3: left C / right D Select pages 2-3 Output: cover, A, B, C, D — five pages
The selection uses positions in the PDF. A printed page number is not the selection number: if the first scanned sheet says 12, it is still page 1 in the tool.
Check the reading direction of the original. The example assumes left-to-right reading. Review the exported order rather than assuming it matches every book.
When the same cut does not fit every page
The cut is a straight line and the same setting applies to the selection. It does not flatten a curved binding or repair text lost in a dark gutter. If margins vary substantially, prepare separate groups with suitable settings.
For several small receipts scattered around a sheet, use the receipt tool, which provides individual frames instead of a single dividing line.
Cropping is not redaction
The crop keeps the underlying PDF content. It must not be used to permanently hide confidential information: content outside the visible area may remain in the file.
Keep the original scan and open the final PDF to check every page edge. Cutting a scan does not perform OCR or recover missing detail.
